Bright prospect of strawberry farming in N-region
RAJSHAHI, Mar 5: Growers level extension of strawberry farming can bring a new horizon in the agriculture sector in Bangladesh, reports BSS.
There has been a bright prospect of farming the strawberry, highest-value crop, everywhere in the country excepting its coastal districts.
Due attention should be given on motivating the farmers so that they could be habituated towards the farming commercially as it has highest economic importance.
Biologists, agricultural scientists and farmers observed it at a discussion styled “Strawberry Cultivation in Bangladesh” at the Department of Botany of Rajshahi University (RU) here today.
Bangladesh Strawberry Association (BSA) arranged the discussion on the occasion of its annual general meeting and visit to the strawberry demonstration field sites.
BSA President and Professor of the Botany department Dr Monzur Hossain, who is one of the pioneers in the country’s strawberry research and variety innovation, depicted an overview of the crop and its farming aspect in the country.
Speakers said, the Plant Breeding and Gene Engineering Laboratory of the Botany department has innovated three varieties of strawberry through applying tissue culture method. In the demonstration field, all those were found adaptive in the country’s soil and environmental conditions successfully.
In terms of taste and flavor, the developed varieties are same as those are being imported from abroad by spending hard- earned foreign currencies. Professor Dr Rafiul Islam of the Botany department, BADC Joint Director Sarder Salahuddin, DAE Deputy Director Brozohari Das, BARI Senior Scientific Officer Lutfor Rahman and successful strawberry farmer Professor Abdul Mannan also gave salient features of the cash crop on the occasion.
Talking to BSS Dr Monzur Hossain said, cultivation process of the innovated varieties is similar like other vegetables like potato and brinjal but market values of those are much higher.
